The Treasury

The Treasury, or Al Khazna, is Petra's most magnificent façade, rising nearly 40 meters high. It features intricate Corinthian capitals, friezes, and figures, crowned by a funerary urn that local legend claims hides a pharaoh's treasure. Built in the 1st century BC, its original function remains a mystery, though it is believed to have been a royal memorial. The Treasury is composed of two floors, with a width of 25.3 meters and a height of 39.1 meters. Recent excavations have revealed a graveyard beneath the structure, adding to the intrigue of its purpose. The façade, with its three chambers, showcases the advanced Nabataean engineering and craftsmanship.
