The Great Wall of Jordan (Shbeib Line)

The Great Wall of Jordan (Shbeib Line)

The Great Wall of Jordan, locally known as the Shbeib Line, is one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in the country. It is considered the second longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China and the oldest long defensive wall globally. The wall dates back to the Nabataean era (around the 3rd century BC) and stretches approximately 140 kilometers, starting from Khirbet Al-Da‘ouk in Ras Al-Naqab, passing through Khirbet Al-Muraygha, and reaching Wadi Al-Hasa to the north, making it the longest wall in the Middle East. Since 1996, the site has been studied and documented as part of archaeological projects in the Ras Al-Naqab region. Researchers have examined its engineering system, construction techniques, and stone materials. Jordanian archaeologists and academics emphasize the importance of preserving the wall, raising awareness about its historical value, and integrating it into local tourism trails to support sustainable tourism and local communities.
