Al-Humaima al abbasiya Village Website

The Islamic village of Al-Humayma is located in southern Jordan, in the Ma'an Governorate, near the town of Al-Qweira, approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Aqaba and 300 kilometers south of the capital, Amman. It lies along the southwestern edge of the Sharah Mountains in a dry desert environment with an annual rainfall average of around 80 millimeters, making it a remarkable example of human adaptation to arid conditions. Al-Humayma holds significant historical importance as it served as the headquarters and stronghold of the Abbasid movement before their successful revolution against the Umayyad Caliphate in the 2nd century AH. The village was granted by the Umayyad Caliph Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik in 95 AH (713 AD) to Ali ibn Abdullah ibn Abbas, who made it a permanent residence for his family. From here, the Abbasids began their covert missionary activities, sending envoys across the Islamic world, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Abbasid Caliphate in 132 AH (749 AD). Many prominent Abbasid figures were born and raised in Al-Humayma, including Caliphs Abu al-Abbas al-Saffah and Abu Ja'far al-Mansur. The site also contains archaeological remains from the Umayyad period, as well as earlier Nabataean and Roman periods. Notable among these are the intricate water channels that extend for more than 26 kilometers, supplying water from the "Ain al-Jamam" spring at Ras al-Naqab using advanced hydraulic engineering techniques. Visitors can still see the remains of the Umayyad palace, the Abbasid mosque, and traces of the ancient trade routes that connected Al-Humayma to the broader commercial and pilgrimage networks of the region.
