West Baths

The West Bath is the earliest known public bathhouse among the seven uncovered in the ancient ruins of Jerash. While traditionally believed to have been constructed in the early 2nd century AD, some scholars suggest it may date to the late 1st century. Roman in design, the bathhouse is centered around a large courtyard surrounded by colonnaded porticoes. This space, known as a palaestra, served as a social and recreational hub where bathers would congregate before or after bathing and may have been used for athletic activities. The bath complex itself comprised multiple chambers designated for bathing at varying temperatures, including hot, warm, and cold rooms, reflecting the sophisticated Roman approach to hygiene and leisure.
