The cave of the Prophet of God, our master Lot, peace be upon him

The Cave of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) is an ancient and revered site located in the mountains near the city of Karak, Jordan, overlooking the town of Ghor Al-Safi in the southern Jordan Valley. According to historical and archaeological findings, this cave is believed to be the place where Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) took refuge after leaving his city at night, following Allah’s command, before the divine punishment befell his people. Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) was the son of Haran, making him the nephew of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him). He was sent as a messenger to the people of Sodom in the land of Zoar (modern-day Jordan), a community known for its extreme wickedness, disbelief, and immoral behavior. He called them to monotheism and righteousness, warning them against their sinful acts. However, they persisted in their transgressions, leading to Allah’s wrath upon them. The Quran narrates their story multiple times, including in Surah Al-A’raf (7:80-84), Surah Hud (11:82-83), and Surah Al-Shu’ara (26:165-173). The people of Sodom were destroyed when Allah sent a rain of stones and overturned their city, leaving it as a lesson for future generations. Lot’s wife, who was sympathetic to her people's ways, was also destroyed for her betrayal, as mentioned in Surah At-Tahrim (66:10). Archaeologists and historians believe that Prophet Lot’s sons, Moab and Ammon, were born in this cave, which is significant in Jordan’s history. Their descendants later formed the Moabite and Ammonite kingdoms, linking this site to the early civilizations of Jordan. Today, the Cave of Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) remains an important historical and religious landmark, attracting visitors who seek to connect with its biblical and Quranic significance. The site also includes the remains of an ancient Byzantine church, further highlighting its spiritual and cultural importance.
