Qasr al-Usaykhim

Qasr al-Usaykhim

Qasr al-Usaykhim is a small Roman fort located in Jordan's northeastern desert, approximately 22 kilometers north of Azraq. Constructed in the 3rd century AD atop a hill, the fort offers panoramic views of the surrounding basalt landscape. Built from basalt stones, it features rooms arranged around a square courtyard, with a notable arch still standing at the entrance. The site may have originally been a Nabataean farmstead in the 1st century AD before its conversion into a Roman military outpost. Due to its remote location and lack of a reliable water source, it likely served as a strategic lookout point, monitoring routes and nearby fortifications such as Qasr Azraq. Today, Qasr al-Usaykhim is a testament to the region's layered history, reflecting both Nabataean and Roman architectural influences.
