Shaumari Wildlife Reserve

Shaumari Wildlife Reserve

Established in 1975 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is located near the city of Azraq in eastern Jordan. The reserve was created as a breeding center for endangered and locally extinct wildlife species, with a primary focus on the reintroduction of the Arabian Oryx, which had disappeared from Jordan's wilderness. Spanning 22 square kilometers, Shaumari provides a safe habitat for various native species, including Persian onagers, ostriches, and gazelles. The reserve features a mix of arid desert landscapes and sparse vegetation, creating an ideal environment for desert-adapted flora and fauna. Today, it serves as a key site for wildlife conservation, environmental education, and ecotourism, offering visitors guided tours, wildlife observation points, and educational activities to learn about Jordan's natural heritage.
