Temple of Zeus

The Temple of Zeus is part of the ancient city of Jerash, one of the most prosperous cities of the Decapolis during the Roman period. Settled around the seventh millennium B.C., Jerash's strategic location at the crossroads between major north-south and east-west trade routes contributed to its rise under Antiochus IV (175–164 B.C.). Known as Gerasa in Roman times, the city thrived but gradually lost its significance after the fall of the Umayyad caliphate, despite maintaining some importance during the Byzantine era with the construction of churches and a synagogue.
