Ancient Islamic City of Ayla

The Ancient Islamic City of Ayla was one of the earliest Islamic cities, established in the 7th century AD during the reign of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan. Located in present-day Aqaba, Jordan, Ayla served as a crucial commercial and maritime hub due to its strategic position at the crossroads of trade routes connecting Arabia, the Levant, and North Africa. The city was well-planned, featuring rectangular walls, fortified gates, streets, and a central mosque, reflecting early Islamic urban design. It flourished under the Umayyads, Abbasids, and Fatimids, witnessing economic and cultural prosperity. However, by the 12th century, Ayla declined due to earthquakes, conflicts, and shifting trade routes. Excavations have revealed inscriptions, coins, pottery, and architectural remains, providing valuable insights into early Islamic civilization.
