'Unayza Castle

‘Unayza Castle is situated on the central Jordan plateau, near the Desert Highway, with Mahattat ‘Unaiza—one of the historic stations along the Hijaz Railway—located about 400 meters to the east. The closest settlement is the village of Hashimiyya, around 3 kilometers to the north. The surrounding landscape is dominated by Jabal ‘Unaiza, an extinct volcano roughly 2 kilometers west of the fort, which has left a thin basalt layer across the area. The site includes the main Ottoman fort structure along with remnants of earlier defensive walls, indicating previous constructions. North of the fort lies a significant depression, believed to have once served as a reservoir, underscoring the historical importance of this site in the region’s architectural and environmental history.
