The Minaret of Al-Qastal

The Minaret of Al-Qastal is considered one of the oldest surviving minarets in the world, located in the village of Al-Qastal near Amman, Jordan. Dating back to the early Islamic period, this minaret is believed to have been constructed around the 7th century, making it a rare and invaluable example of early Islamic architecture. It was likely part of a mosque or a religious complex built during the Umayyad caliphate, a period when the Islamic world was expanding and establishing its architectural identity. The Minaret of Al-Qastal is characterized by its simple, cylindrical design, with a small dome at the top, reflecting the modest yet functional style typical of early Islamic minarets. The minaret's historical significance lies not only in its age but also in its role as an important marker of Islamic presence in the region. Today, it stands as a symbol of Jordan's early Islamic heritage and a testament to the region’s architectural ingenuity during the early centuries of Islam.
