The Church and Shrine of Our Lady of the Mountain

The Church and Shrine of Our Lady of the Mountain is a Catholic church located in the town of Anjara, in Ajloun Governorate, northwest Jordan. Its modern foundation dates back to 1932, built on the ruins of an ancient church from the 4th century AD. The church is one of the five officially recognized Christian pilgrimage sites in Jordan by the Vatican, which has overseen it as a pilgrimage destination since the year 2000. The significance of this shrine lies in the Christian belief that Jesus Christ and His mother, Mary spent a short time in a cave in Anjara during their travels across the Levant. It is believed that Jesus and His disciples took the route from Nazareth to Jerusalem through the Jordan Valley, passing through Umm Qais, Pella, Anjara, Jerash, and then to the Baptism Site on the Jordan River, where John the Baptist (Prophet Yahya) preached. This route was used to avoid the persecution of the Jews who sought to kill John the Baptist. Christian pilgrimage to the Church of Our Lady of the Mountain is traditionally held every year in June.
