Tel Mar Elias

Tell Mar Elias is located approximately 9 km northwest of Ajloun, within a forested area surrounded by wild trees. It is a small hill rising about 900 meters above sea level. The name is believed to be associated with the Prophet Elijah (peace be upon him), who is mentioned in the Quran and the Old Testament. This association is supported by the discovery of a Greek inscription on a mosaic floor, explicitly naming Prophet Elias and stating that the mosaic church floor was dedicated in his honor. Additionally, the nearby village of Listib, located just 500 meters west of the church site, is believed to resemble the birthplace of Prophet Elijah mentioned in the Old Testament. However, no archaeological evidence has yet confirmed that the site dates back to the Iron Age (910–680 BC), the period in which Prophet Elijah lived. Further excavation and test trenches are needed to determine whether the site was inhabited during that era. Tell Mar Elias is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Ajloun due to its historical and religious significance. The site's name has been widely recognized since ancient times, prompting the Department of Antiquities to conduct excavations. The archaeological work began in 1999, uncovering a large church covering approximately 1,340 square meters, dating to the early 6th century AD, with a beautifully decorated mosaic floor. In 2001, excavations revealed a smaller church adjacent to the first one on the western side, believed to be older. To distinguish between them, the churches were given separate designations.
