Amman Citadel Cistern – Umayyad Cistern

A historic underground cistern dating back to the Umayyad period, built in 730 AD inside the Amman Citadel to supply water to the Umayyad Palace. It is about 5 meters deep, 17.5 meters in diameter, and could hold over 1,370 cubic meters of water. A central column was likely used to measure water levels, and stairs allow access to the bottom for maintenance. It was restored in the early 1990s and remains a remarkable example of Umayyad engineering
